Poetry, Prose & Speech Festival

The English Department showcased the creative talents of their pupils with a wonderful evening of poetry, prose and speech.

Girls from Year 7 to the Sixth Form, who participate in creative writing, poetry and debate clubs, took to the stage of Waterlow Hall to share their work last night. Winners of last term’s poetry competition, judged by our Poet-in-Residence, Frances Leviston, read their poems aloud; Madeleine, who scooped last year’s GDST Creative Writing prize, shared her short story on the theme of fearlessness; and some of our most successful debaters and public speakers spoke out about political issues and their passions with great poise and wit.

The evening concluded with South Hampstead alumna and writer Lola Bursari – a former bursary pupil – reading her poem entitled ‘SHHS’, followed by English Teacher, Mr Garrard, a published poet who was commended in last year’s National Poetry Competition. Well done to everyone involved for a inspiring evening, demonstrating the power of the written and spoken word.
