Academic Journals

Academic Scholars have contributed to the latest issues of the Beacon and Pilot Light, with diverse essays focused on the theme of rhythm.

The Beacon is an edifying collection of articles by scholars in Year 11 and the Lower Sixth, with topics ranging from architecture and space colonisation to acoustic design and the BRIC economies.  The digital illustration on the front cover was designed by Lower Sixth Art Scholar, Amelia, using rhythm as the inspiration.

Meanwhile, the Pilot Light features essays written by our scholars in Years 7 to 10; their fascinating articles cover topics as diverse as page flow in comic art, the patterns of serial killers, paradoxical breathing and the circatidal rhythms of speckled sea lice. The digital illustration on the front cover was designed by Lower Sixth Art Scholar, Zoya.

Chief Scholar, Ailin, oversaw the publication of the most recent editions of both journals. “As we begin to emerge from the pandemic, the rhythms of the past few two years are shifting; it’s been fascinating to read how our scholars have interpreted this year’s theme in a multitude of ways. I hope you enjoy reading their articles as much as I have.”

Each year,  our scholars contribute to an academic journal, attend symposia to discuss their ideas, and join an annual cultural trip and dinner; scholarships are awarded on entry to Year 7 and the Sixth Form.
