Commonwealth Fencer

Year 11 student, Zoya, has been selected to compete for England at this year’s Commonwealth Fencing Championships.

Zoya, who has been fencing since the age of eight, will compete as part of the U17 cadet squad in the épée discipline in London this August. Her fencing highlights to date include placing third at the British Cadet Championships and second at the Manchester Cadet Competition; she now looking forward to competing on the international stage this summer, after her GCSEs.

Zoya explains what she enjoys about the sport: “Fencing requires both physical fitness and mental agility – you have to be able to anticipate the actions of your opponent, a bit like in chess. It’s a sport that teaches you to deal with stress and how to be resilient.”

She currently trains three times a week for 2 hours per session, with a busy schedule of weekend competitions, so is grateful to the support of the school in helping her balance her academic studies with her sporting commitments. We look forward to watching her in action over the summer.
