Top Philosophers
Six students are through to the national finals of the Ethics Cup, hosted by the Department of Philosophy at the University of St Andrews.
A team of Philosophy & Religion GCSE and A Level students were selected to represent South Hampstead at the regional round at the University of Nottingham. Up against students from across the UK, our philosophers were tasked with studying various cases, before discussing them, exchanging ideas and responding to the thoughts of other teams. Topics included ghosting and online dating; naming prestigious events after historical figures who had problematic views; and whether family members should suspend their beliefs for a quiet Christmas.
The annual competition aims to promote interest in philosophy and civil discourse on ethical issues of public concern. Keya, Molly and Sophia (Year 10) and Lily, Isobel and Suchita (Lower Sixth) tackled some tricky subjects with typical aplomb, to be crowned regional champions. We look forward to tracking their progress as they compete in the national finals at the University of St Andrews in the summer.
