Global Issues Oracy Project
Year 9 embraced a new three-day project, developing their understanding of international current affairs.
The global issues oracy project is a cross-curricular programme which aims to equip girls with a greater knowledge of economics, politics, ethics and human rights, whilst also developing their research and communication skills. During the inaugural project, pupils explored key themes from a range of perspectives, with specialist teachers giving lectures on themes such as the ethics of business, the political compass, and fairness vs equality. In small groups, pupils then determined a research question relating to a global issue, explored accurate sources of information, then delivered a balanced, cohesive presentation to their peers and teachers. Topics tackled included: Is Taxation Fair? Why does Corruption exist in South America? Is there a Correlation between Inflation and a Rise in Petty Theft?
Those deemed to have met the criteria best went on to present to the whole year group and a staff panel, including our Head of Politics, Economics Teachers, and Mrs Paul. Congratulations to everyone for engaging with such diverse themes, with a special mention to our winning team (Astrid, Bethany, Dasha, Millie and Reya) whose presentation addressed the following: Are We Living in a Male-Designed World?
Students embraced the challenge, one of the many learning initiatives we develop to encourage our students to become morally responsible citizens of the future. “I really enjoyed doing the research – it felt like I was in charge of my project.” “The feedback given at the end of the presentation was really helpful!” “I really enjoyed listening to other people’s presentations and learning about such important issues.”
