Chinese New Year
Our Mandarin students and the wider school community celebrated the Lunar New Year this week.
To mark the beginning of the Year of the Snake, our Modern Languages Department organised a host of activities. Pupils played Chinese Chess at Chinese Society – a new lunchtime club set up by Year 10 Mandarin students this year – and practised their calligraphy during their lessons, writing characters such as 吉 and 大吉大利 to symbolise auspiciousness, luck and great prosperity. We also welcomed an instructor to lead a popular Chinese fan dance workshop in Waterlow Hall and enjoyed Chinese food and fortune cookies.
Mandarin is part of our core languages provision at South Hampstead for pupils in Year 7 and above and is an option at GCSE and in the Sixth Form.
