Geography Society Speakers

The Geography Department continues to open the doors and minds of pupils with more illuminating guest speakers this term.

This week, the Senior School Geography Society welcomed Professor Jason Dittmer from UCL to give an engaging talk about the ‘Special Relationship’ with the USA.  He spoke about NATO, the Cold War, bullets, technology, the sharing of intelligence, decolonisation and the use of British overseas territories for eavesdropping on other nations – a wide-ranging and fascinating talk.

Earlier this term, we also hosted Professor Mat Disney from UCL, who spoke to students about his work around forests and carbon storage.  Professor Disney, who featured in the film Judi Dench made about trees last year, spoke about his fieldwork and about getting more accurate data to assess how important tropical rainforests are in the sequestration of carbon. He also shared his work in measuring London’s urban forests, and how Camden has a surprising amount of trees that are able to sequester far more carbon than was previously thought.

The UCL experts are just some of the many guest speakers we regularly welcome into South Hampstead to open the doors, hearts and minds of our pupils and the wider community.
