Classics Reading Medals

Girls across the school came away from The Classical Association’s London Greek & Latin Reading Competition with a several medals last week.

The competition was of a high standard, judged by two eminent academics, with our pupils up against schools such as Westminster, St Paul’s Boys, St. Paul’s Girls, Godolphin & Latymer and Haberdasher’s Boys.

Pupils from Year 7 through to the Sixth Form entered four different classes. In Junior Latin, Year 7 pupils Olivia, Mariella and Clara distinguished themselves against older opposition with their Latin playlet on the death of Caecilius, winning the bronze medal. In the solo pre-GCSE Latin category, Emily in Year 11 read an extract from Aeneid II on the death of Priam, with great accuracy and moving expression to take silver. In the Senior Greek category, another silver medal was awarded to Rosie and Zoe in the Lower Sixth, for their wonderfully venomous exchange as Medea and Creon, while our Greek Chorus (Lower Sixth students Sophie, Camille, Abigail, Ishika and Zoe, along with Emily and Nandana from Year 11) also took silver.

Emily in Year 11 commented: “Our small group arrived at Queen’s College to participate in a rather unusual event… In the end, we took home a mixture of bronze and silver medals, but most importantly of all, we really enjoyed ourselves… and had the chance to meet John Taylor, the infamous author of both our Greek and Latin textbooks for GCSE and A Level! A huge thank you to Mr Tanfield for arranging this fantastic opportunity.”

Congratulations to all the girls on their medal-winning performances.
