Culture List for Lockdown
As we entered lockdown, our Director of Sixth Form initiated a weekly culture list for our Sixth Form students.
Each week, Mr Waller has been sending students a range of cultural recommendations to broaden horizons while at home – from podcasts and poetry to music albums and ambitious vegan recipes.
FemSoc leaders, Harriet and Lucia, took the helm as guest editors one week, with suggestions including political podcasts (When Women Run from FiveThirtyEight), a Sally Rooney essay on debating (Even if you beat me), a talk by Difficult Women author Helen Lewis, a documentary on artist Yayoi Kusama and various films by female directors.
The lists have also featured a number of works by former South Hampstead pupils. Alumna and reporter Datshiane Navanayagam was recently shortlisted for the global One World Media 2020 award for her short film, Girls Behind Bars, for Channel 4’s Unreported World. Datshi was awarded a bursary to South Hampstead at the age of 11; she went on to become head girl and read History at Cambridge before becoming a journalist.
Another journalist and former South Hampstead pupil, Katya Adler, featured on the most recent culture list. The BBC Europe Editor’s new mini series on Radio 4’s One to One explores what makes people tick, featuring short interviews with athlete James Cracknell, journalist Simon Hattenstone and psychologist, Professor Wiebke Bleidorn.
