Eco Remembrance Poppies

Each year, to support The Royal British Legion, our students make plastic-free poppies that grow back as wildflowers.

During Eco Week, students at lunchtime Design & Technology Club were busy creating sustainable poppies ahead of Remembrance Day. Made with biodegradable glue and paper embedded with wildflower seeds, the poppies can be planted in soil after being worn and grow back as flowers.

Pupils have been making these innovative alternatives for the past few years, raising several thousand pounds for The Royal British Legion.  This year, the initiative was spied by the Royal Horticultural Society, who asked Design & Technology Teacher, Ms Pearce, to create a how-to guide, inspiring others to make their own.  The Royal British Legion commented: “This is fantastic! Please do thank everybody involved – for supporting our Armed Forces community and our planet.”

Our eco-poppy making is just one of the many initiatives that help promote a culture of education for sustainability at South Hampstead that is truly integrated and holistic.
