Engineering Club

Sixth Form students and budding engineers have set up a new lunchtime club to inspire younger pupils.

A Level students Jocelyn and Sky initiated the club with the aim of encouraging pupils across the school to have a go at building things, considering design and structure, as well inviting engineers to share their experiences and projects they’ve worked on.

Early sessions have involved building towers out of spaghetti and marshmallows (and learning why triangles are the strongest shape to use) and designing and making paper gliders before testing them outside, with varying degrees of success! This week, girls heard from guest speaker Victoria Richardson, a senior engineer with ARUP. In 2017, Victoria was acknowledged as one of the ‘Top 50 Women in Engineering under 35’. She spoke to the girls about working on London’s Elizabeth Line and a community suspension bridge in rural Rwanda.

Engineering Club is one of over 140 clubs and societies that run before, during and after school each week. South Hampstead’s buzzing schedule of co-curricular activities provides ample opportunities for all girls to discover new interests, to develop new skills and to thrive beyond the classroom.
