GDST Celebrates 150

In 1872, four pioneering women set out to ensure that girls were offered the same educational opportunities as their brothers.

150 years after they established the first Girls’ Day School Trust schools, parents, alumnae, staff and bursary students from all 25 GDST schools came together for a celebratory evening at the Science Museum to reflect on the progress that’s been made and the history that’s still to be written.

The highlight of the event was the announcement of the GDST Alumnae of the Year awards.  We were delighted to have two South Hampstead alumnae shortlisted: TV and film professional, Negeen Yazdi (class of 1995) and Junior Doctor, Grace Spence Green (class of 2014), who was awarded Trailblazer of the Year.  Read more about all the nominees, the winners and their incredible work here.

As part of the evening, a Sixth Former from Nottingham Girls’ High School spoke movingly about her experience as a deaf student, explaining how transformative the bursary support she receives has been in her educational journey. The GDST also announced their aim to provide an additional 150 bursaries for pupils within the network; find out more about how you can join the bursary campaign, and help us to empower the next generation of girls.
