GDST Travel Awards
Two Upper Sixth students have been awarded travel scholarships from the Girls’ Day School Trust, heading to Cuba, India and Nepal.
Each year, the GDST grants up to 12 awards to Sixth Form leavers with enterprising personal travel plans. Congratulations to this year’s South Hampstead recipients, Eliza and Nicole, who look forward to embarking on their adventures once Covid travel restrictions lift.
Eliza (Head Girl 2020/21) was awarded this year’s Sir William Cash scholarship, founded in memory of the Chairman of the Trust Council from 1948 to1964; Eliza plans to travel around Cuba solo next year and learn Spanish.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to have been awarded this scholarship, which has given me the opportunity to travel to Havana. I plan to complete my fieldwork on the societal differences between a communist and capitalist city, which will support my American university applications.”
Nicole hopes to travel to India and Nepal and volunteer with charities who help empower underprivileged women and children; after her gap year, she plans to study Biomedical Sciences.
The awarding committee commented: “These scholarships constitute a veritable springboard for students to think creatively and imaginatively about how their travel plans might provide experience relevant to their future studies and careers, whilst making a meaningful and positive impact on the communities and societies being visited.”
