Head Girl Team

Our recently appointed Head Girls are interviewed and photographed by our new Media & PR captain, Lita.

Meet our newly elected Head Girl, Katie, and the rest of the team: Ailin (Academic & Scholarship), Chehara (Diversity & Inclusion), Duha (Wellness & Peer Counselling), Eden (Environment & Estates), Edie (Charities & Co-curricular) and Filipa (Lead House Captain).

When did you join South Hampstead and what advice would you give to girls joining at the same stage?

Ailin: I joined in the Sixth Form, and would recommend making sure that you’re open to new opportunities and meeting new people – everyone is so friendly, so don’t worry about making friends.

Chehara: I started in Year 7 and didn’t know anyone; I’d suggest joining as many clubs as possible as it really helps getting to know people.

How would you describe South Hampstead?

Katie: Open-minded and friendly; you’re encouraged to pursue whatever you want, from arts to academics.

Eden: Enthusiastic, passionate, unique – everyone is encouraged to embrace their own passion.

What is your favourite co-curricular activity at school?

Edie: Debating – it’s really good for public speaking skills, meeting people in other years, and attending loads of fun competitions.

Filipa: I love netball; it’s great for team-building and so much fun. I’ve really bonded with people from all years.

Eden: Jewish Society (JSoc) is really inclusive – girls attend from across all years, and we host an amazing range of speakers.

What aspect of your role on the Head Girl Team are you most excited by?

Katie: We’re hoping to introduce some really cool things. We’ve all got lots of ideas, like introducing more self-defence into the PE curriculum.

Ailin: I’m looking forward to writing on the website and publishing articles about things I really enjoy and like to read about, so I can share them with others.

What activity kept you sane when isolating at home during lockdown?

Duha: I learnt to appreciate more time by myself and discovered things I wouldn’t normally do, like baking – I made so many cookies!

Edie: I learnt to cook vegan meals, which has been quite challenging as my family are not vegan.

What are you most looking forward to about the coming year?

Katie: I hope to introduce more of our Sixth Form socials to the lower years. Hopefully, we can have lots of events to make up for the lack of them last year, with lots of speakers and specialist talks.

Duha: Definitely bringing more music back to the school – not just in concerts, but at break and lunchtimes. After a stressful year, we all need something calm and uplifting.

The new team will be supported by over a dozen students who take up other roles of responsibility as part of the Sixth Form Leadership Team. Thank you to our wonderful outgoing Head Girl Team – Eliza and deputies Amy, Auhona, Harriet, Liana and Pico – for all that they have achieved during their tenure, with great enthusiasm and humour, despite the challenges of lockdown.
