Les Misérables

Waterlow Hall was transformed into a 19th century Parisian streetscape for three epic performances of the world’s longest-running musical.

The ambitious production, based on Victor Hugo’s novel, examines topics of redemption, justice and social inequality and features one of the most memorable scores of all time. Nearly 100 pupil performers, band members, lighting operators, sound technicians, and backstage crew members – from Year 7 to the Sixth Form – showed incredible commitment and camaraderie during the numerous rehearsals. Throughout the sell-out run, pupils delivered three phenomenal performances to an appreciative audience of family, friends and staff, who also enjoyed a special cameo performance from our Head of Cricket, Mr Learoyd. Other highlights included the hilarious Thénardier comedy duo, exquisite performances from the characters Jean Valjean and Javert, and the sheer passion from everyone involved both backstage and onstage.

“We are so lucky to work with such talented, passionate and dedicated students; this is a production that has created the most wonderful memories.”  Ms Martin, Director of Drama

“It was an amazing opportunity to be part of a fun, creative community and to cultivate friendships across the year groups that will last for many years to come.” Annie, Lower Sixth

It is 10 years since we last staged Les Misérables at South Hampstead and 5 years since Waterlow Hall was renovated to create a state-of-the-art performance space, so it was a joy to be able to make use of the enhanced acoustics, tiered seating, staging and technical decks for this year’s spectacular production.
