Lunchtime Maths

To celebrate STEM week, the Maths Department challenged pupils to solve problems in a fun series of activities.

Girls across the school report back on how they spent their lunch breaks.

The Maths Department created a wall of puzzles, each one based on a famous woman in Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths, with a description of her most famous moment. The puzzles were suitable for all years and once you had solved them, you won an edible prize! – Talia in Year 7

My friends and I took part in the box challenge. Most of the puzzles to find the four-digit padlock codes were quite challenging, but not too hard. As we were under time pressure, we had to be even more careful to be accurate with our answers. Though we didn’t manage to finish it, it was still really fun. –  Zoe in Year 8

During the escape room challenge, we were given the task of finding a four-digit pin to disable an alarm in Albert Einstein’s house. In order to successfully escape within the time limit, we had to identify hidden messages throughout the room that allowed us to unlock padlocks on boxes containing additional riddles and puzzles. Our group managed to escape just in the nick of time, with around 30 seconds remaining! The skills we used in the escape room were mostly logical skills with an element of problem-solving from maths too. Overall, it was a fun and challenging experience – with the involvement of sweets as a prize as a slight incentive!Vrinda in Year 9
