Maths Fest

A Level Mathematicians enjoyed an inspiring day at the Royal Institution, applying Maths beyond the classroom setting.

Maths Fest is the brainchild of stand-up mathematician Matt Parker and Maths author Rob Eastaway – an all-day extravaganza for Sixth Formers, featuring some of the best Maths speakers in the UK. All our Lower Sixth Maths students attended the day, enjoying engaging lectures on the applications of Maths in the real world, from the Rubik’s Cube and video games, to crowd flow and circus games.  In the intervals, girls took the opportunity to get their calculators signed by the speakers, leaving them with a wonderful momento of the day.

Two of our Further Mathematicians also took part in the Maths Slam competition – an opportunity for students to present for up to three minutes on any Maths topic they find interesting, with the celebrity speakers choosing their favourite presentation. Congratulations to Carolina and Shivani who were declared the winners; their micro-presentation on Fibonacci numbers, the golden ratio, and its appearance in music and nature earned them a puzzle book and set of dice!
