Medal-winning Scientists

South Hampstead Scientists continue their tradition of impressive results in national competitions designed to test knowledge and thinking beyond the curriculum.

In this year’s British Biology Olympiad, 9465 students from 727 schools worldwide participated, with only 7.2% of entrants awarded a prestigious Gold Medal. Our Upper Sixth Biologists sat two challenging papers, exploring off-syllabus material that requires a great deal of mental agility. Congratulations to AJ on her Silver Medal and Normandie for attaining a Gold – a great achievement.

In the Chemistry Olympiad, four Upper Sixth students sat Round One: a difficult 2 hour exam paper set on off-syllabus material. In the past, we have had Bronze and Silver awards but even our students going on to study Chemistry at Oxford have not achieved a Gold to date. This year we were delighted that Normandie was comfortably inside the Gold grade boundary, so a big congratulations to her. Chessy obtained a Silver award and AJ and Lisa a Bronze; all were delighted with their achievement which has given them extra confidence for their upcoming external examinations.

Congratulations to our three students who participated in the British Physics Olympiad AS Challenge this year: Saaya achieved a Bronze award, while Biba and Lia were awarded commendations. In the challenging GCSE Physics paper, Lucia and Sydney were awarded Silver medals; Chloe and Astor were awarded Bronze 1 medals, while Cosima and Natasha obtained Bronze 2 medals. We also had commendations for Anisa, Christina, Cassandra, Clotilde and Emily. Well done to all who participated in both competitions!
