Music Scholar Successes
Two of our talented Sixth Form Music Scholars have been awarded prestigious scholarships as they consider their studies beyond South Hampstead.
Kaelyn, who began playing the violin at the age of 4, joined South Hampstead for the Sixth Form last year and rapidly established herself as a prodigious musical talent. She achieved Grade 8 at the age of 8 and the ABRSM Diploma last year. Currently taking A Levels in Chemistry, Maths, Further Maths and Physics, she plans to study Chemistry at Imperial College London this October. Kaelyn has received Imperial’s Ash Music Scholarship which grants her free tuition at the Royal College of Music and automatic enrolment into Imperial College Symphony Orchestra for three years. In addition, as the highest scoring scholarship candidate overall, she has been awarded Imperial’s Coldstream Guards Scholarship – an outstanding achievement. Kaelyn plays in South Hampstead’s Chamber Group, Symphony and Chamber Orchestras. “Music at South Hampstead is amazing – everyone is so open and well-supported and we are always encouraged to express ourselves.”
Miri was recently awarded a Choral Award at Christ’s College Cambridge, where she plans to study Music this October. Miri joined South Hampstead at the age of 4 and discovered her love of music in Year 1, when all our pupils learn a string instrument. She went on to learn the flute in Year 3 and joined the Chamber Choir in Year 5. In the Senior School, she has participated in (and won) numerous choral competitions, achieved a Grade 8 distinction in singing, and led a range of musical initiatives, including a successful Rock Concert, as Sixth Form Music Captain. She has also started conducting recently. Currently taking A Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Music and Physics, she is keen to further her passion for academic research in music and science. “I feel incredibly lucky to be part of school that prioritises music in education. There are few school music departments that are as open-minded and appreciative of all types of musical talent.”
