National Ski Champions
Our ski squad have been crowned British schools’ ski champions after winning the girls’ slalom team event in Wales.
On the back of their success at the English Championships last month, two of our teams qualified for the national open championships in Llandudno. In an extremely tough competition, our B team (Amelie in Year 8, Connie in Year 9, Carla and Rosa in the Lower Sixth) placed a very creditable seventh place, with a special mention to Connie and Amelie who were racing in their first national final against much older skiers. After the first run, South Hampstead’s A team (Cecilia in Year 8, Melissa in Year 11, Maddy and Momo in the Upper Sixth) were in the lead – but needed a fast time from their last skier to maintain pole position. A nail-biting final run resulted in beating Reed’s, one of the premier ski racing schools in the country, by just 0.6 of a second. Congratulations to the girls on their phenomenal success, and thanks to our parents and CDC coaches for their on-going support.
South Hampstead’s ski squad was launched in 2014 with a just few girls who had never raced before travelling to the Hemel Snowdome and dry slope at Welwyn to learn how to slalom. A decade later, the girls have trained and competed across Europe, winning numerous titles along the way. Momo and Maddy joined the squad when they were in Year 4; now in their final year of Sixth Form, they end their South Hampstead skiing careers on a podium high.
