Photography Prize
A Sixth Form Geographer has won a global photography award for her series of images exploring climate change.
The Earth Photo competition, run by the Royal Geographical Society and Forestry England, received over 1,400 entries worldwide from still and moving image makers, telling powerful stories about our planet. Mae in the Lower Sixth submitted a series of black and white prints from her recent Geography fieldtrip to Iceland, winning the David Wolf Kaye Future Potential Award of £250 and mentoring by a leading photographer. Her images of retreating glaciers, ice-waterfalls and geysers were accompanied by captions explaining the impact of global warming and highlighting Iceland’s approach to renewable energy.
Mae was the youngest of eight global photographers and filmmakers chosen as this year’s winners, announced at the Royal Geographic Society (RGS) by the Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist, Marissa Roth. Entries are on display at the RGS gallery until the end of August before being exhibited outdoors across Forestry England sites and at the Lishui International Photography Festival in China this December.
