Pilot Light Ignites

A collection of essays by our younger Academic Scholars, from Years 7 to 10, has been published online this term – the inaugural edition of The Pilot Light.

Following in the footsteps of The Beacon, which features essays by our Sixth Form Academic Scholars each year, The Pilot Light contains illuminating works by South Hampstead pupils from the Lower and Upper School.

The first issue of the academic journal centres on the theme of ignition. At lunchtime symposia last term, the girls gave short speeches about their research before finalising their work. Senior Scholars supported the younger pupils throughout the process, helping to curate and edit the collection, fostering a sense of camaraderie and academic endeavour. The final essays explore volcanoes and wildfires; espionage and classical music; feminist fashion and the lyrics of Billy Joel.

The first edition, with cover artwork by Upper Sixth Scholar, Saaya, is out now. Lillian, a Year 10 Scholar, commented: “I thoroughly enjoyed discussing ideas with my Year 8 buddies and seeing how they explored them individually in their essays.”

Sixth Former Amelie, as South Hampstead’s newly appointed Chief Scholar, added: “I was struck by the creativity, diligence and dedication shown which shines through in every article. It has been an incredible experience… hopefully this will be the only edition to be published in a national lockdown!”

Lower and Upper School Academic Scholarships are awarded based on performance in the entrance examination or, for pupils transitioning from South Hampstead Junior School, as recommended by the Head of the Junior School. South Hampstead’s Academic Scholars contribute to an annual journal and attend a cultural trip and scholars’ dinner.
