Pinhole Photography

Over the Easter holidays, girls in Year 10 and 11 joined the Art Department and artist Melanie King for a pinhole photography day, exploring the basic concepts of a camera.

In the one day workshop in our Art studios, pupils learned how to use the Ilford Obscura pinhole camera to its full potential: how to load the film and paper, calculate the correct exposure,  process the film and paper in our darkroom and print positive images from their negative prints.

Melanie King is an artist and curator, with a specific focus on astronomy, as well as co-Director of super/collider, Lumen Studios and the London Alternative Photography Collective. She also lectures on the MA programme at the Royal College of Art and on the BA Photography course at University of West London. The course was also led by Art Teacher Mr Hunter, who is a specialist in alternative photographic techniques and processes and runs the ‘Introduction to Photography’ course as part of the Mehr Licht enrichment programme for pupils in Year 9.
