Pride Week

To celebrate LGBT+ History Month, Sixth Formers planned a fun-filled week of activities for Pride Week, now a well-established tradition at South Hampstead.

Last week, students started selling rainbow shoelaces that proved so popular, they sold out in record time. During the week itself, people were greeted each morning by iconic LGBT+ tracks playing in the atrium, and rainbows become an established part of the décor. Every year group had the opportunity to engage in the week through student-created and student-led form time activities and assemblies. We kicked off with a film screening, and welcomed two inspiring speakers – Ian Elmslie (who read from his book ‘A Marvellous Party’ and discussed his experiences of LGBT+ history and the prominent role he played in the 90s gay cabaret scene) and Donna Powell (a rapper, lyricist, spoken-word artist and drag king, who gave a talk and spoken-word performance).

To finish off the week, we enjoyed a rainbow-themed non-uniform day; those who attended at least five Pride Week events could win prizes as part of our ‘Follow The Rainbow’ competition. All money raised from Pride Week is going to the Albert Kennedy Trust, a charity that tackles LGBT+ youth homelessness and the issues associated with it.
