Remembering Mrs Nina Schaffer
We are sad to announce that former Geography Teacher Mrs Nina Schaffer has passed away, aged 88.
Nina had a lifelong association with South Hampstead, where she taught Geography for over 20 years until her retirement in 1994. She taught her students to understand the complexity of our world, appreciating physical processes, human interference with the natural world and the increasing vulnerability of human communities. Nina lived a vibrant life to the full. She was independent, intellectual and engaged. During her working life, and in her retirement, she would speak with passion and concern about the environment. Nina was a regular at our alumnae reunion events, and was always delighted to catch up with her former students and hear their news.
The sixth form Geography Prize will be renamed the Schaffer Geography Prize in her honour and we are delighted that to ensure that her legacy lives on, her family are sponsoring bursary pupils to give them access to some of the many wonderful Geography trips that were founded and led by Mrs Schaffer.
