Rising Star

English Teacher Dr Etheridge has been shortlisted for a national Rising Star Award for her commitment to encouraging girls to speak out.

The annual WeAreTheCity awards highlight outstanding achievements of women across the UK and Northern Ireland, shining a light on the next generation of trailblazers.

Dr Kate Etheridge, who heads up South Hampstead’s debating and public speaking programme, has been shortlisted in this year’s Education & Academia category, sponsored by the University of Oxford’s Said Business School.

Dr Etheridge’s dynamic approach aims to ensure that as many young women as possible, both at school and in the local community, develop the confidence to express their views with confidence and conviction. One of her key initiatives has been establishing Debate Hub which empowers dozens of young women, who would not otherwise have access to debating provision, to collaborate, consider alternative viewpoints, and enjoy winning arguments.  In 2020, South Hampstead was presented with the English-Speaking Union (ESU) Oracy Culture Award in recognition of her work.
