Sex Ed Debate
A busy term of debating culminated in a friendly competition with 130 pupils from 10 local schools, co-hosted by Sex Ed Matters.
Our latest Debate Hub event was sponsored by Sex Ed Matters, who tackle sex and relationship taboos with the aim of empowering young people to change their communities through understanding and action. The social enterprise is run by twin sisters and activists who led the international ‘End Tampon Tax’ campaign, which succeeded in changing UK law in 2021.
For our first co-hosted Debate Hub event, we welcomed pupils from Year 7 to the Sixth Form from a range of state and independent London schools, both single sex and co-ed. The teams challenged stigmas, shared ideas and developed new perspectives around consent, periods, sexuality and friendships. They tackled topics including whether relationships and sex education should be taught to mixed or single sex groups, menstrual leave, the importance of honesty in relationships, and the increasing number of labels in the LGBTQ+ space.
Congratulations to all our participants for engaging in such cogent debates, with a special mention to the overall winners, South Hampstead and Highgate. Our three winning teams were Elysia in Year 8, and Lakshanna and Nina in Year 7; Chiara, Eleanor and Leila in Year 10; and Sophia and Nihaarika in Year 10 and Kylie in Year 8.
