STEM in Action
Our Scientists, Mathematicians and budding Engineers have enjoyed a dazzling array of interactive events this term to bring their learning to life.
The Education in Action events, hosted in central London, aim to provide inspiring experiences beyond the classroom, with thought-provoking sessions from world-class speakers. Year 10 had a fantastic day at GCSE Science in Action, watching lectures from all areas of Science, with some of our pupils getting up on the big stage to join live demonstrations. Pupils enjoyed talks about Jupiter’s aurora and a fascinating session from PhD student Affelia Wibisono, from UCL’s Department of Space & Climate Physics, about how cryogenics might be applicable to freezing humans.
At their Physics in Action day, A Level Physicists joined lectures to learn about the very first stars in our universe; how it could be possible to live a zero-carbon life; and how fusion energy can power the world. At Biology in Action, A Level Biologists were challenged to think about the wider applications of their studies; talks addressed ideas from the hunt for alien life and astrobiology to how geonomics is allowing early detection of oesophageal cancer. A Level Mathematicians heard from special guests speakers who explored different topics in statistics, engineering and data science, providing insight into how Mathematics is used in real life.
Meanwhile, our Year 11 and A Level Design & Technology Product Design students spent an edifying morning at Squire & Partners Architects’ Practice in Brixton. Their half day visit enabled them to see the design journey first hand, from initial concepts through to model-making, digital iterations and completed works. With thanks to Ms Larizadeh, Associate Director of Squire & Partners and Lecturer at The University of Cambridge, for facilitating the tour.
