STEM Week
To coincide with British Science Week, we hosted a range of activities championing Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths.
A team of Year 7 pupils joined other aspiring Scientists at the Devonshire House Science Fair, presenting their independent research projects, where Mehak’s model washing machine, powered by food reactions, scooped the runner-up prize. Meanwhile in Year 10, Maddie was named as a finalist in the GDST STEM 700-word essay writing contest for her article exploring injuries in women’s sport. A group of Year 10 Scientists took part in a Physics Tournament at St Helen’s School in Northwood, alongside 21 other schools; as well as hearing from STEM experts and taking part in a calculation relay, they placed 4th in an escape room task and 3rd in an experimental challenge, showing excellent teamwork and problem-solving skills.
Back at school, pupils of all ages took part in an inter-House Maths competition and design challenges to devise water-carrying pulley systems and assess the recyclability of certain plastics. Lunchtime lectures covered topics as diverse as the future of AI, an exploration of the senses, and the journey to becoming an astronomer. Even the House Fashion Show had a scientific theme, as pupils produced innovative creations based on their DNA, resulting in a catwalk showcasing an eclectic array of designs – a colourful end to a creative week.
