STEM Writer Awards

Two students have picked up top awards at a national STEM writing competition.

Congratulations to Sophie in Year 7 who came first in the Under 14 Technology category, with her essay How Will CRISPR Change Us? and Lower Sixth student Lia, who came second in the Under 18 Engineering category, with her essay entitled Synthetic Biology: Cancer’s Potential Cure?

The annual #STEM700 essay prize, initiated by a GDST pupil at sister school, Sydenham High, is designed to draw out students’ passion for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

This year, students from across the UK submitted 700 word articles in one of four categories.  Over 30 shortlisted finalists were invited to the awards ceremony before schools closed last month, where illustrious guest judges included a Senior Associate at Ernst & Young, named as one of the top Tech Women in the UK; a biomass research consultant; a former GDST pupil and PhD student at the University of Cambridge, researching novel therapeutics for rare paediatric brain tumours; and a Senior First Officer at British Airways.
