Students Shortlisted for Award

Our Sixth Formers who developed a ‘family phone pledge’ have been shortlisted for a new Tes award: Student Initiative of the Year.

The Times Educational Supplement (Tes) Independent School Awards 2020 recognise stand-out projects accomplished during the 2018/2019 academic year.  South Hampstead students have been shortlisted for their work to help pupils and their families to be more mindful of their digital habits.

The South Hampstead ‘family phone pledge’ was initiated last year by the Head Girl Team and Sixth Form Psychology A Level students, who conducted research on self-esteem. Identifying a negative correlation between the time spent on Instagram and the confidence levels of teenagers, they decided to develop a screen-time ‘contract’ for the whole school community to use. Testament to the power of their project, the pledge garnered a lot of interest from the media and the wider public, enabling the girls to see for themselves the positive impact that psychological research can have on the lives of individuals in society.

Tes editor, Ann Mroz said: “Those that have earned a place on the Tes Independent School Awards shortlist are a cut above the rest. We received an unparalleled number of entries this year, all of which were first rate. The schools that have been shortlisted should be proud – it’s a remarkable achievement.”

The winners will be revealed at an awards ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel next February.
