Sustainable Design Day
To coincide with Eco Week, Year 9 pupils enjoyed a full day of workshops focused on sustainable product design, architecture and engineering.
The Design & Technology Department organised a whole day of hands-on activities that encouraged the girls to work collaboratively and to think, design and build creatively in response to environmental challenges. Girls chose whether to focus on product design (building emergency relief shelters, based on pop-up and collapsible design ideas), architecture (modelling the infrastructure and various elements of a sustainable approach to community and housing design) or engineering (designing, modelling and testing wind turbine blades). The girls embraced the tasks with great enthusiasm, resulting in impressive models and prototypes. They also had the opportunity to take part in an upcycling workshop with ecoACTIVE, re-purposing old tshirts into bags and accessories and learning about the impact of fast fashion.
South Hampstead’s Design & Technology Department includes a qualified architect, a textile designer and an UN-accredited climate change teacher.
