World Class Fencing

One of our Year 9 pupils competed in her first world fencing championships in a very snowy Finland last month, achieving an impressive 6th place.

Crinan started fencing in Year 2, just to keep a friend company, and now regularly trains as an épée fencer with Chelsea Fencing. Along with her team mates, she qualified to represent GB at the U17 International Cadet Circuit in Espoo, Finland – their first cadet world championship. Épée is the heaviest of the three modern fencing weapons and requires a large amount of concentration, accuracy and speed. Successful épée fencers must be able to anticipate their opponent’s moves and strike their opponent at the correct time.

“In one of our fights, we ended up about eight points down, but being able to regain a lead and going on to win felt absolutely amazing! We were aiming to get into the top 16 but finished in sixth place so we were thrilled.” A great achievement – congratulations, Crinan.
